03 Diciembre 2008 / Press release
UN-INSTRAW and the Center for Arab Women Training and Research (CAWTAR) organized a National- Round Table on the Political Participation of Women in the Maghreb, on Wednesday, 26 November 2008, at CAWTAR headquarters in Tunisia.
This will be the third round table, following those that were held in Morocco and Algeria, to be organized within the context of the joint UN-INSTRAW/CAWTAR project "Strengthening Women's Leadership and Participation in Politics and Decision-Making in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia," which was launched in June 2008 with funding from the Spanish Government.
Several national actors were convened to participate in this round- table, including: representatives from political parties, Parliament, the Senate, governmental and non-governmental institutions, as well as experts, researchers and professionals from the media who commented on the specific components of the project and reflected on its future directions.
Moreover, the round- table provided the opportunity to exchange views on the state of women's participation in political life, including the main actors and the national and sub-regional priorities that have been identified. Equally, an exchange of experiences and of good practices between the participants enriched the debate around the problems that have been raised in connection to the issue of women's leadership and their participation in decision-making processes at the local level.
This project contributes to strengthening the integration of women in political life and in decision-making process in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia - countries that are considered to be open to women's participation in those areas, having asserted their willingness to promote women's rights and having ratified the most important international instruments and conventions aiming at the achievement of gender equality in the exercise of political rights.
Within the framework of this project, several research, capacity building, advocacy and communication activities have been planned with the objective of ensuring a better impact on the actual exercise of women's political rights and in promoting their essential role in decision- making at all levels.
